Model Y eating
rear tires? We fix the cause.

Inside-edge rear tire wear on a Model 3 or Model Y comes from rear camber the factory arms can't adjust. KC installs adjustable camber arms and aligns the car so the tire finally sits flat.

The signs

Sound familiar?

  • Inside edge of the rear tires worn smooth while the outside still has tread
  • A faint hum or roar from the back that gets louder with speed
  • Rear tires gone in 15,000 to 25,000 miles
  • Tire shop says "alignment" but the last alignment didn't fix it

Text KC a photo of the tire and your car's year. He'll tell you in a few minutes whether it's toe, camber, or a worn part, and what it would cost to fix.

Why it happens

Rear camber you can't adjust.

Tesla builds the Model 3 and Model Y with negative rear camber for handling, and the factory upper arms have no adjustment. A regular alignment can set rear toe, and that helps, but it can't stand the tire back up. Put a heavy battery on top, instant torque behind it, and a car that has settled a little lower with age or aftermarket springs, and the inside edge of the rear tire carries all the load.

The fix is mechanical: adjustable rear upper control arms, called camber arms, that let KC bring camber back toward zero. Then a full alignment so toe is right with the new geometry. Done together, the tire sits flat, the hum goes away, and the next set of tires lasts the way it should.

Tesla Tire Wear FAQ

Why do Model Y and Model 3 rear tires wear on the inside?

Two reasons stacked together. Tesla sets rear camber negative for handling, and the rear camber isn't adjustable on the factory arms. Add a heavy battery, instant torque and a car that's often a little low from wear or aftermarket springs, and the inside edge of the rear tires does all the work.

What are adjustable camber arms?

Replacement rear upper control arms with a threaded adjuster. They let KC dial rear camber back toward zero so the tire sits flat on the road. After the arms go in, the car gets a full alignment so toe is correct too.

Which arms do you install?

Reputable adjustable arms for your model and year. Bring your own or have KC source a set. Text a photo of your tire and your car's year and he'll tell you what fits.

How much does it cost?

The alignment runs $250 to $450 depending on the model. The arms and install depend on the kit, so KC quotes that by text once he knows your year and model. You'll have a total before anything is ordered.

Does this void the warranty?

Installing aftermarket arms doesn't void your vehicle warranty. Tesla can decline a claim on a part they believe was damaged by an aftermarket part, which is why the install and alignment need to be done properly.

How long does the job take?

Arms plus alignment is usually a half day, same day. KC confirms a time when you book.
